By the Routes of Santiago de Compostela, in the route that took the pilgrims from Grândola to Alcácer do Sal, by Ribeiro do Arcão, Vale do Guizo and then the river Sado.

GR11 - Vale do Sado (33.4 km)
The trail starts at the Archaeological Crypt in the Alcácer do Sal Castle grounds.
From here, admire the view of “Ribeira do Sado”, with its rice fields, green in spring and summer, brown in autumn and winter. And then visit the museum of the “Archaeological Crypt”, the Church of Santa Maria, the remains of the Roman Forum. The Aracoelli Convent, which dominates the area, belonged to the Order of Friars Minor (Order of St. Francis) and was also called the Convent of Arsere. It was extinguished on February 2, 1874, by the death of the last nun, after the 1834 decision to abolish religious orders in Portugal. Currently serves as a hotel inn.
Then begin the descent by the cruise in front of Santa Maria Church, down Rua da Matriz, then the old Calçada de Santa Luzia, now Rua do Castelo, and then the old Rua dos Açougues (Slaughterhouses Street), now Rua José Pomba Cupido, to Largo dos Açougues. Go down southeast to Consolação Church, and then along the 31st January Sidewalk, Dr. Joaquim José Alegre Sidewalk and Dr. Nobre Street until you reach Santiago Church. And then, by Largo Campos Valdez, reach Avenida João Soares Branco, marginal to the Sado River. Admire the old bridge, but continue east across the Municipal Garden, longitudinally, at the bottom of which, on the left, next to the gas station, you will find the GR11-E9 marks. And from here we go to Barrosinha, where we take the well-defined trails of this Great Route.
The route goes south, along the Santa Catarina Channel, which belongs to the irrigation network of the Aproveitamento Hidroagrícola do Vale do Sado. Since 1948, from the reservoirs of Pego do Altar and Vale do Gaio, this exploitation irrigates 96 km2 of marshes and irrigated crops, where the rice occupies 94%.
After Vale de Maceira, Sapalinho and Andivas, before reaching Arouca, at 38 18 09.50 N, 08 28 09 W, follow from the canal to the river, and then south again until you reach the Cais do Baracinha, in Vale do Guizo.
The crossing of the Sado River in Vale do Guizo is done like hundreds of years ago: by boat. Mr. Leonel Baracinha "inherited" this task from his ancestors: initially, transporting the workers of the rice fields, who used to make the "avios" (the grocery shopping) at Vale do Guizo; today, transporting the pedestrians, to whom the river ceases to be an obstacle insurmountable thanks to its boat. So, anyone who wants to cross the river here must call the portuguese phone number 265 637 158 and combine the crossing. This is in case you are on the right bank. If you are on the left bank, you only must go to Leonel Baracinha's tavern and ask to pass the river.
Cross the village, pass the Igreja de N. Senhora do Monte, XVIII century, and continue south, now along the right bank of Ribeiro do Arcão. The GR11-E9 marks, red and white, will help you.
After the small Porches Dam, head southeast until you reach (38.2529N, 8.4887W) one track going south and shortly thereafter west until you reach Forninho (38.2466N, 8.5033W). Go south on the way, cross the Ribeiro do Arcão, and then continue south on the left bank, crossing again the stream to the right bank at 38.2376N, 8.5009W. Continue along the brook, to the south, crossing it again, now to the left bank, at 38.2303N, 8.5002W.
Follow the road that leads you to southwest, pass Enxota Tordos, passing over the freeway, until Monte da Freixeira. Then to south, passing the Ribeira da Freixeira dam and again to southwest, and then south from 38.2043N, 8.5393W. At 38.1960N, 8.5379W, head southwest until you reach Aldeia do Futuro. And from there, to the south, to the train station of Grândola. At the station, cross west and follow along Avenida Jorge Nunes and then Rua Dr. Rosário Costa, until Dr. Jacinto Nunes Garden, in front of the Grândola City Hall.

The study, recognition and marking of this section of the GR11-E9 "Atlantic Route", the great trans-European pedestrian route that runs along the European coast from St Petersburg (Russia) to Cape St. Vincent (Portugal) was done in 1999 by CIMO (Clube Ibérico de Montanhismo e Orientação).
GR11 E9 Grandola - Alcacer do Sal
GR11 - Vale do Sado (33,4 km)
O percurso inicia-se na Cripta Arqueológica, no recinto do Castelo de Alcácer do Sal.
Admiremos daqui a vista da “Ribeira do Sado”, com os seus campos de arroz, verdes na Primavera e no Verão, castanhos no Outono e no Inverno. E visitemos em seguida o museu da “Cripta Arqueológica”, a Igreja de Santa Maria, os vestígios do Fórum romano. O Convento de Aracoelli, que domina a zona, pertencia à Ordem dos Frades Menores (Ordem de São Francisco) e era também designado por Convento de Arsere. Foi extinto em 2 de fevereiro de 1874, por morte da última religiosa, após a decisão de 1834 de extinção das ordens religiosas em Portugal. Serve atualmente como pousada hoteleira.
Iniciemos depois a descida pelo cruzeiro fronteiro à Igreja de Santa Maria, descendo pela Rua da Matriz, depois pela antiga Calçada de Santa Luzia, agora Rua do Castelo, e depois pela antiga Rua dos Açougues, agora Rua José Pomba Cupido, até ao Largo dos Açougues. Desça depois para sudeste, até à Igreja da Consolação, e depois pela Calçada 31 de janeiro, Calçada Dr. Joaquim José Alegre e Rua Dr. Nobre até chegar à Igreja de Santiago. E depois, pelo Largo Campos Valdez, alcance a Avenida João Soares Branco, marginal ao Rio Sado. Admire a ponte velha, mas continue para nascente, atravessando o Jardim Municipal no sentido longitudinal, ao fundo do qual, à esquerda, junto ao posto de abastecimento de combustível, já se poderão encontrar as marcas do GR11-E9. E seguimos daqui até à Barrosinha, onde se tomam os trilhos bem definidos desta Grande Rota.
O percurso segue para sul, ao longo do Canal de Santa Catarina, pertencente à rede de rega do Aproveitamento Hidroagrícola do Vale do Sado. Desde 1948, a partir das albufeiras do Pego do Altar e do Vale do Gaio, este aproveitamento irriga 96 km2 de sapais e culturas de regadio, nas quais o arroz tem um peso de 94%.
Depois de passar por Vale de Maceira, Sapalinho e Andivas, antes de chegar a Arouca, em 38 18 09.50 N, 08 28 09 W, siga do canal até ao rio, e depois de novo para sul até chegar ao cais do Baracinha, em Vale do Guizo.
A travessia do Rio Sado em Vale do Guizo é feita como há centenas de anos: de barco. O Sr. Leonel Baracinha “herdou” essa tarefa dos seus antepassados: antes, transportando as trabalhadoras dos arrozais, que iam fazer os “avios” a Vale do Guizo; hoje, transportando os pedestrianistas, para quem o rio deixa de ser um obstáculo intransponível graças ao seu barco. Assim, quem quiser atravessar o rio aqui deve telefonar com antecedência — 265 637 158 — e combinar a travessia. Isto no caso de estarem na margem direita. Se estiverem na margem esquerda, devem dirigir-se à tasca do Leonel Baracinha e solicitar-lhe a passagem.
Atravesse a aldeia, passando pela Igreja de N. Senhora do Monte, do séc. XVIII, e continue para sul, agora ao longo da margem direita do Ribeiro do Arcão. As marcas do GR11-E9, vermelhas e brancas, ajudá-lo-ão.
Após a pequena Barragem de Porches, dirija-se para sudeste até atingir (38.2529N, 8.4887W) um caminho para sul e pouco depois para oeste até chegar ao Forninho (38.2466N, 8.5033W). Siga para sul, pelo caminho, atravesse o Ribeiro do Arcão, e continue ainda depois para sul, pela margem esquerda, atravessando de novo o ribeiro para a margem direita em 38.2376N, 8.5009W. Continue ao longo do ribeiro, para sul, atravessando-o de novo, agora para a margem esquerda, em 38.2303N, 8.5002W.
Siga agora pelo estradão que o encaminha para sudoeste, passando por Enxota Tordos, passando por cima da autoestrada, até ao Monte da Freixeira. Depois para sul, passando pela represa da Ribeira da Freixeira e de novo para sudoeste, e depois para sul a partir de 38.2043N, 8.5393W. Em 38.1960N, 8.5379W, siga agora para sudoeste até chegar à Aldeia do Futuro. E a partir dai, para sul, até à estação ferroviária de Grândola. Na estação, atravesse para poente e siga ao longo da Avenida Jorge Nunes e depois da Rua do Dr. Rosário Costa, até ao Jardim Dr. Jacinto Nunes, em frente à Câmara Municipal de Grândola.
